What is Dobrojlo?
This is a DIY instrument that I made. It’s inspired by well known stringed instruments like banjo, cigar box guitar, mandolin, resonator, ukulele etc., but still unique with some unusual features. That’s why it needed a unique name and I call it “Dobrojlo” (probably hard to pronounce for all non-Slavic languages, but who cares).
The idea was to build a fretless 3-4 string guitar from scraps of wood and other materials, as well as guitar parts lying in drawers somewhere, and to buy other materials (and make/change decisions) during the building process. There is no schematic, sketch, plan or anything on paper (not even the digital version), it was built as I envisioned it – so the only blueprint is in my head 🙂 …and many trial-and-error situations later, here it is.
The neck – a piece of chair leg I found in the basement (can I identify wood? yup, it’s wood :), the body – a hexagonal plywood box from the craft store (6$) and that was enough to start with.
Did I succeed in the end? Well… somehow it works and I record music with it. It’s the new weapon in my musical instrument armory.
Making of… there are some pictures of the process.
Yes, that was fun and challenging at the same time, but there will still be only one Dobrojlo, because I have no intention to build another one. It was a total improvisation.
And here it is…
This is the latest updated version, with additional sound hole and piezo bridge. Viola strings, aluminium fretless fingerboard and it’s ready for any tuning I imagine. You can hear it in action on some of my World Music albums…
